Eduroam

STAFF AND FACULTY

What is Eduroam?

Eduroam is a wireless network, available world‐wide, within most universities and other post‐secondary institutions. It allows individuals from an Eduroam‐partnered institution to connect to the Eduroam wireless network at the hosting institution, using their existing network credentials.

What’s required to make it work?

  • The university that the user is visiting must be partnered with Eduroam.
  • The user’s own educational institution must be partnered with Eduroam (UOIT is a partner).
  • The user attempting to connect to Eduroam must have a valid, active network account at his own educational institution.
  • HOW DO I SIGN IN?

    WINDOWS 8/8..1 INSTRUCTIONS

    • Click the Windows key.  Type in the search bar ‘Connect to a network’
    • Select the ‘eduroam’ network
    • Do not select the check box to use your Windows username and password
    • Username – type in your banner ID + @uoit.ca (for example – 100XXXXXX@uoit.ca)
    • Password – use the same network password that you would use to sign into your computer + ‘Connect’.

    WINDOWS 7 INSTRUCTIONS

    • Right click on the network connection in the bottom right, usually where it shows the bars for connection strength.
    • Select ‘Open Network and Sharing Centre’.
    • If eduroam is already listed there, you may want to remove it, then add it manually.  Otherwise just click ‘Add’ and use the following settings:

    Network name:        eduroam
    Security type:            WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption type:      AES

    • Leave security key blank and select next.
    • Select ‘Change connection settings’.
    • On the security tab, select the “Settings’ button next to ‘Microsoft:  Protected EAP (PEAP)’
    • Uncheck ‘Validate server certificate’.
    • Click the “Configure…’ button next to the ‘Secured password’ dropdown.
    • Uncheck ‘Automatically use my Windows logon name and password’.
    • Click OK twice to get back to the security tab, and click ‘Advanced settings’.
    • Check the ‘Specify authentication mode’ checkbox.
  • I CANNOT CONNECT TO EDUROAM WHEN I AM AT ANOTHER UNIVERSITY. WHAT COULD BE THE CAUSE?

Some of the most common reasons that users are unable to connect are:

    • Expired or locked out user account
    • Incorrect ID or password
    • Forgetting to type your bannerID@uoit.ca (e.g. 100XXXXXX@uoit.ca).
    • If users cannot see the eduroam network while at another institution, they may not be partnered with eduroam or it is temporarily unavailable
